Tapestry sampler

Looms don’t have to be large structures. They are really just a device by which to hold warp threads under tension while the weft threads are placed into position. A simple loom can be made from sturdy cardboard. I made this tapestry sampler recently to demonstrate how to make a simple cardboard loom and set it up for tapestry weaving. This piece was the result. Very wobbly and not exactly pretty. It has garish colours and one wouldn’t say there was much demonstration of tasteful design. But it was fun to make and I love it! It was a great way to play around with a few different tapestry techniques, blending different colours, and creating curves/stripes as well as blocks of colour.

Ever thought about trying tapestry weaving? I have prepared a basic set of instructions that I am happy to email out for free to anyone interested in having a go. A great school holiday activity too!

Use this link to download free instructions for how to make a simple cardboard loom like the one used to make the sampler in this picture.

If you need carpet yarn, and would like to dye your own, I have white, undyed wool for sale here. Or, I have a range of colours available here.

A good life is like a weaving. Energy is created in the tension. The struggle, the pull and tug are everything.
